POST-COGNITIVIST THEORIS IN HCI AND CSCW
A graduate reading course (5 to 10 points)

Time: June-November 2003
Place: Department of Informatics, Umeå University
Teacher: Victor Kaptelinin

Historically, the dominant paradigm in HCI, when it appeared as a field in early 80s, was information processing ("cognitivist") psychology. In recent decades, as the focus of research moved beyond information processing to include how the use of technology emerges in social, cultural and organizational contexts, a variety of conceptual frameworks have been proposed as candidate theoretical foundations for "second-wave" HCI and CSCW. They include, among others, activity theory, phenomenology, distributed cognition, grounded theory, and ethnomethodology.

The purpose of the prospective graduate course is to discuss the underlying ideas of some of the leading "post-cognitivist" theoretical perspectives in HCI and CSCW, assess their relevance to informatics (in a broad sense), and articulate similarities and differences between the approaches.
