Dear Friends,
Here is the news about our prospective meeting in Arkhangelsk.
It turns out four people cannot come if the meeting is held as planned: =
Pentti, Monica, Estrid,=20
and myself (I am sorry, something has come up lately, which was =
impossible to anticipate!). Pentti=20
suggests to have a meeting in Vilnius in May instead. For Monica summer =
or fall would be a=20
better time for the meeting. There is still an uncertainty about two =
persons.
Therefore, the overall picture of prospective participation looks like =
this (site "quotas" are indicated
in parentheses, "+" indicates that the person can attend the meeting, =
"-" that he or she cannot attend, and
"?" stands for uncertainty):
Ronneby (4): +++-
Kajaani (4): ++--
Copenhagen (2): -?
Pite=E5 (2): ++
Ume=E5 (2): ?-
We have two options. The first one is to go ahead with the planned =
meeting. I believe Alexander, Victoria, Olga, and Polina
will put together a wonderful program that will include visits, =
presentations, discussions, and perhaps some sightseeing :)=20
Since some of us cannot attend the event, there will be a chance to =
involve other people, for instance
undergraduate students participating in the project.
Another option would be to change our plans.
Personally, I am in favor of the first option. We cannot be sure =
re-scheduling of the meeting will not create new problems for=20
other participants, and therefore we might discover that there is no =
advantage in changing the plans. There is a small logistical problem =
related=20
to the first option. Since I am not coming, it might turn out everyone =
will have to pay for the hotel and meals with his/her=20
credit card or cash in Arkhangelsk. Hopefully, it will not be an =
obstacle for participation, because these expenses will be surely=20
reimbursed promptly after the meeting is over, you will just have to =
save the receipts and send an invoice to the project.=20
(As to the tickets, you do not have to pay for them yourself, just have =
your travel agent send=20
the invoice to me directly).
This is my personal opinion but of course there can be other points of =
view, as well. Under present circumstances we need to make a decision
as a group, so please let me know what you think: should we proceed with =
arranging a meeting as planned or consider other options?
Thank you!
Best wishes,
Victor

Dear Friends,
The responses I got to my previous message indicate that we should have our
project meeting in Arkhangelsk in April as planned. Some of you supported
the idea, some said the meeting can be either in April or in May.
Therefore, the meeting will take place in Arkhangelsk, April 6-10! Please
make your travel arrangements accordingly.
1. When you make ticket reservations, please have your travel agents send
the invoices to me:
Victor Kaptelinin
Informatik
Umea Univ.
901 87 Umea
SWEDEN
2. You will need to get a Russian visa and it can take some time, so please
take care of the visa problem as soon as you can. If you need visa support
(invitations from Arkhangelsk to participate in the project meeting),
please send your details (names, DOBs, passport numbers) to:
ASoloviev@asma.ru (please, indicate in the SUBJECT line that the message is
for Alexander Vyazmin)
3. In Arkhangelsk you will have to pay for hotels, meals, and local
transportation yourself. Therefore, please save the receipts and your
expenses will be reimbursed to you after the meeting as soon as you send
your requests to me (you can use the address indicated above).
4. Currently prospective participation in the Arkhangelsk meeting looks as
follows (except people from Arkhangelsk):
Kajaani -- 2 (including one person from Petrozavodsk)
Umea -- 1 (not certain yet)
Ronneby -- 3
Copenhagen -- 1
Pitea -- 2
Once again, I believe Alexander, Victoria, Olga, and Polina will put
together a wonderful program!
Best wishes,
Victor

Dear colleagues,
I have tried to book flight tickets to Arkhangelsk for our meeting. It was
not easy. The route that Victor suggested
(Arkhangelsk-Murmansk-Rovaniemi-Luleå) is according to my contact on the
travel agency Nyman & Schultz (who has been in telefon contact with
Aeroflot) now changed. For us in Ronneby the best flights seem to be the
following (and they are not good at all). We have to start one day earlier
than planned:
5/4 (Observe: Thursday)
Ronneby 16.50 - Kobenhagen 20.05 - Moskow (arrival 04.55, departure 09.30)
- Arkhangelsk 11.30
alternatively
Ronneby 09.05 - Stockholm 12.05 - Arkhangelsk 19.45
9/4
Arkhangelsk 17.30 - Moscow - Frankfurt 22.55
Overnight in Frankfurt
10/4 Frankfurt 08.20 - Kopenhagen - Ronneby 11.30
alternatively Frankfurt 12.35 - Kbh - Ronneby 16.10
Have you found better connections or do you have faced similar problems?
Please, let me know.
Best regards,
Berthel

Dear Friends,
Here is some information about the Aeroflot flight I mentioned earlier
(Lulea-Rovaniemi-Murmansk-Arkhangelsk). The best thing about this flight is
that it is the same aircraft that flies from Lulea to Arkhangelsk. You will
have to leave the plane in Murmansk and go through the customs and passport
control, but then you will board the same plane and continue to
Arkhangelsk, where you will be met by our Arkhangelsk friends. Other
arangements include changing planes (from international to domestic Russian
flights) and, if you travel via Moscow, changing airports (which can be a
sort of a problem if you have never been in Russia before).
It is not possible to book the whole flight at most travel agencies,
because it includes a domestic leg (Murmansk-Arkhangelsk), which is not
connected to the global flight reservation computer network. Barents
Business Center, a small travel agency located in Overkalix, can do that
because they have some kind of "special relations" with people in Russia
(whatever it means...). Also, they can help you with Russian visas. They
promise to obtain a visa in 7 working days and it will cost 500 SEK, which
is not that much...
You can check their website: http://fly.to/barentsbc/
(phone/ fax 0926-200 66, international +46-926 200 66, email:
barentsbc@telia.com)
I spoke to the head of the agency and he told me it is possible for you to
buy tickets/ visa services from the agency so that the invoices will go
directly to me. I would only ask you to keep me posted about your requests
to the agency, just in case.
Of course, if at another agency you find a flight or visa arrangements that
suit you better, you can still ask them to send invoices to me!
Best wishes,
Victor

Hej Tine!
Jag har talat med Leif Strandberg i Piteå och med den person, Brynolf, som
arbetar med resor till Arkhangelsk vid Barents Business Center i Överkalix
i Norrbotten. Han kan också ordna visum, silket betyder att vi sklipper gå
via ryska ambassaden. För ett visum behöver han:
- Kopia av passet
- 3 foton (svart-vita tagna i automat dyger)
Barents Business Center
Box 100
956 22 Överkalix
Snabba ryck alltså!
Hälsningar
Berthel

Costs 2645 SKR per person (turn and return)
Luleå-Arkhangelsk (turn and return)
Costs 5380 SKR per person (including invitation and visa)
Here we are 7 persons, Leif and Susann are included.
Hotel Pornavaluk will cost 40$ per night and single room.
Costs 7 people X 4 nights X 40 $ = 11200 SKR
To that will be added costs for transportation to and from hotel.
Any objections to this arrangement? If not, we go for it.
I wait until Monday afternoon and then confirm to Brynolf.
Don´t forget the passport copy, the 3 photos, and the filled-in questionare!
Have a nice week-end!
Berthel

Subject: [NN5D] the Arkhangelsk travel
Hi,
I have got an invoice from Brynolf Persson, Barents Business Center. It
includes flight and hotel reservations, airport-hotel and hotel-airport
transfer, and visa arrangements for 7 persons (Tine, Estrid, Berthel,
Rosita, Carina, Leif, and Susanne). Brynolf is going to meet you all with
visas and instructions in Lulea on April 6. Your tickets will hopefully be
available at your airports from March 28.
Unfortunately, the originally booked flight from Lulea to Ronneby turned
out to be unavailable and our Ronneby friends will have to take a later one
(so that they will arrive to Ronneby on April 10 at 23:30...).
There have been a fear that the Murmansk-Arkhangelsk part of the flight
will be cancelled after April 1. However, Brynolf told me he was assured by
Swedish aviation authorities (at least this is how I could understand the
meaning of the Swedish name) that everything is going to be OK. Also,
Polina called the airline in Arkhangelsk today and they said we should not
worry about a thing. It appears we should follow this advice...
Pentti, I have not heard from anybody from Kajaani (or "Greater Kajaani" --
that is, including Petrozavodsk and Vilnius :). It is OK if the people you
mentioned make their own travel arrangements and send invoices afterwards.
Perhaps, it can be done so that Oulu University takes care of the trips
right now and then sends a bill to me...
Best wishes,
Victor

Subject: [NN5D] meeting in Arkhangelsk -- CANCELLED :((
Dear Friends,
I am sorry for bringing a bad news but the planned meeting in Arkhangelsk
is cancelled.
Arkhangelsk Airlines pulled an April Fool prank, it terminated the domestic
leg of the Lulea-Arkhangelsk flight (i.e., Murmansk-Arkhangelsk),
effective of the 1st of April. Last week they dismissed fears of such a
termination as an unsubstantiated rumorŠ
Brynolf Persson of the Barents Business Center suggested an alternative
option -travelling by minibus from Lulea to Murmansk (starting out on April
5 in the evening, driving for 5 hours to Finland, staying overnight in a
hotel, and then driving for extra 5 hours to Murmansk to take a domestic
flight to Arkhangelsk). Unfortunately, I had to make a decision this
morning without being able to discuss it with you. Since some of you might
think travelling for about three days (round trip), including 20 hours in
total on a bus is not the best idea of having a good time :), I decided to
call off the whole thing. If you think it was a mistake, you can blame me
for that but it seems I did not have much choiceŠ
We all put considerable effort into getting ready for the meeting and it is
pity it is not going to take place! However, it does not mean we are not
going to have the meeting at all! Now we have to think about new place and
time of our next meeting. Pentti's suggestion was to have the meeting in
Vilnius in May. Another option would be to have the meeting in Russia but
in a place, where we can travel to directly from Helsinki, Copenhagen, and
Stockholm (that is, Moscow or St. Petersburg). Perhaps, you have other
suggestions, as well. Let's discuss all the choices we have!
Best wishes,
Victor

Damn, I was looking so much forward to this, but good thinking, Victor.
What is going to happen to our visa applications? Will they be returned to
us for later use?
I think both options are good, although a place with a site would be
preferable. It also depends on the status of the Vilnius site. Is it
running? If so, I would really like to experience a "low tech" 5th Dimension
site (provided the set-up is still as Milda suggested in September).
Love to all,
Tine

Hi Victor and nn5D!
I believe that your decission was the only thing to do since the time for travelling had been so long
now when the flight between Luleå and Arkhangelsk no longer is available.
Thanks anyway for all the work you have done with the planning for the meeting and thanks to
Berthel here in Ronneby for the work you have done, trying to find flight alternatives for us in
Ronneby etc.
For me both the alternatives (Moscow/St. Petersburg or Vilnius) that you suggested sounds good. I
think it is important that we immediately start to discuss what alternative we shall chose and when in
May we will have the meeting.
Regards,
Rosita
